We had the boy band wars (Backstreet Boys vs. NSYNC), the divas era (Whitney, Mariah, Celine, then Beyoncé and Christina and Britney), the Lilith Fair singer-songwriter wave, the rise of teen pop-punk (Avril Lavigne, Blink-182, Sum 41, New Found Glory), the hip-hop crossover into pure pop dominance (50 Cent, Eminem, Outkast, Jay-Z, Kanye), and the auto-tune-and-club-bangers era that closed out the decade.
